The Michigan Civil Service Commission has selected John Gnodtke as the twelfth state personnel director in the commission's 80-year history. The appointment is effective November 28, 2021. As provided in the state constitution, the position is part of the state classified civil service.

John has served as general counsel for the commission since 2011 and deputy director since 2016 in addition to other roles including legislative liaison, public information officer, retirement board member, and executive secretary for the State Board of Ethics. Prior to that, he worked for the commission in various positions such as assistant general counsel, office administrator, and bureau director. John received bachelor's and law degrees from the University of Michigan.

John will succeed Jan Winters, who will retire this month after a 35-year career with the state.
